If you have started researching Medicare, you have probably hit this question pretty quickly: Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage? They sound similar. They are not.
What Is a Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?
A Medicare Supplement — also called Medigap — works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Its job is simple: pick up the costs Medicare leaves behind, like your 20% coinsurance, deductibles, and hospital copays. With Original Medicare plus a Medigap plan, you can see any doctor in the United States who accepts Medicare, no referrals needed.
The upside: maximum flexibility and predictable costs. The trade-off: higher monthly premiums and no prescription drug coverage — you will need a separate Part D plan.
What Is Medicare Advantage (Part C)?
Medicare Advantage bundles Parts A, B, and usually Part D into one plan — often adding extras like dental, vision, and hearing. Some plans have $0 premiums and can help pay part of your Part B premium. Plans have a yearly out-of-pocket maximum, so you always know the most you will pay in a year.
The trade-off: you will generally need to use in-network providers, may need referrals to see specialists, and some services require prior authorization.
The Catch Nobody Talks About
Here is something that surprises most people: if you start on Medicare Advantage and want to switch to Original Medicare plus Medigap later, you may not be able to get a Medigap plan without medical underwriting in Texas. Once your Medigap Open Enrollment Period ends — the 6 months starting when you turn 65 and enroll in Part B — insurance companies can deny you or charge you more based on health.
This is why the decision at 65 matters so much, and why we spend real time making sure our clients understand their options before choosing.
So Which One Should You Choose?
It depends. If you travel, want total freedom with doctors, and are willing to pay more for predictability — a Medicare Supplement may be your best fit. If you want lower monthly costs, extra benefits, and are comfortable with a network — Medicare Advantage might be the right call.
